BROKEN BACKSTAY
Ah yes, the day that stands in infamy when Panache nearly lost her mast to a broken backstay. I remember it vividly. Fortunately a friend was sailing close by with a timely order to harden up the mainsheet, which saved the stick. He realized the dire situation before I did. What shows below is the temporary repair that allowed me to sail the remainder of the season: a jib halyard in place to support the mast and an adjustable rigging plate on the outboard side to lengthen the repaired split backstay. The permanent repair will be installed in Spring 2024.
