We have "thin water" in Sarasota, Florida and the 18" shoal draft keel is great for ignoring the depth sounder. Unfortunately the fixed rudder sticks down too far. Faced with modifying it to a kick up rudder, as an expedient, I added another pintle below the existing to simply raise the rudder to the new position, about even with the keel. To my greatest surprise it sails fine.
The previous owner added the folding steps for boarding from a dinghy. The line is a means of boarding more easily from an accidental overboard. A cool idea to use an access plate to remove water below the cabin sole.
Relocate the galley. That is bamboo flooring installed on a 1/2" plywood table top. The water comes from a tank under the port settee. Not sure where the sink drains to. I never did find this out.
Move the head to the aft end so you don't have to wake up the crew on the forward berth when nature calls. Nice idea. I guess the drop boards are used for privacy during the day. The flip up step is at the same level as the settees so it doubles as a secure step. It look like there is a holding tank under the cockpit but since this head is over the aft end of the keel, it is unlikely it discharges out to sea.
While it is a convenient location, I don't like the idea that the aft end of the
boat becomes heavier with "use". The sailing performance of a 23 really
suffers if it is not sailed level on her lines. Still, there is less
motion here than up front. |
