Forward Berth Storage Compartment.

Here is a clever storage idea that deserves some thought, a hatch behind the head.  Not only does it provide access to a part of the bilge that is basically inaccessible but it opens a huge storage volume underneath.  I can think of lots of things I could store down there where they would be very secure; tools, spare parts, the sort of things that you don't use all that often!  And you don't have to lift a cushion to access it.

From a maintenance aspect I have wanted to crawl into this spot many times to access the plumbing, electrical wiring or the bulkhead bolts as in Tech Tip B07.  So far discretion has won out over valour as the thought of being pulled out by the feet doesn't hold good by me!  Somewhat embarrassing, if you know what I mean.  This modification opens a whole new realm and I'm very tempted to create this access hole.

This modification was done by Tom Lacquement, the previous owner of Opus.  Unfortunately this is the only picture I have of it as the boat moved to the Great Lakes and I have lost contact with him.  Judging from the two screws that can be seen at the corners they hold up an internal lip support the lid.  Knowing Tom, he also used a sealant to secure the lip.

CONSTRUCTION - It should be a simple job to cut the lid out with a fine tooth double cutting jig saw blade.  Apply masking tape to the whole area to protect the surface while cutting and to prevent "lifting" the gel coat.  Then draw the outline of the lid on the tape, (12x5)".  It is important to radius the corners (1") to prevent stress cracks.  Drill a sequence of tiny holes to create a start point for the blade.  Drill a finger hole through the lid and smooth the inside.  Sand all edges smooth and seal them with epoxy and gel coat.  Install a metal inner support lip.  Use the same technique here as used for cutting out the anchor locker in Tech Tip B11 or installing a drawer in the settee.

CAUTION - The stuff stored down there should be placed in a bag or something similar to prevent it from rolling out of reach.  It MUST NEVER be allowed to roll over the depth sounder or knot meter impeller, if either is installed through the hull.

Tom sold Opus in 2002 and the last I heard (2005) is that Opus is carving through the waters of the Great Lakes.   TOP
